EVIDENCE-BASED THERAPY

occupational therapy

 (hippotherapy)

At Jackson Hole Therapeutic Riding, we integrate the unique movement of horses into evidence-based occupational therapy to help participants reach their highest potential. Our Hippotherapy program is guided by licensed occupational therapists and supported by trained volunteers, ensuring a safe, effective, and enjoyable experience.

WHAT IS HIPPOTHERAPY?

Hippotherapy is a form of occupational therapy that uses the movement of the horse as part of a comprehensive treatment plan. The horse’s rhythmic, multidimensional motion mimics the human gait and helps improve balance, coordination, strength, and sensory processing—key foundations for everyday activities and independence.

WHO CAN BENEFIT?

Our Hippotherapy program supports children with a variety of needs, including:

  • Developmental delays
  • Neuromuscular disorders
  • Traumatic brain injury
  • Sensory processing disorders
  • Autism spectrum disorder
  • Cerebral palsy
  • Down syndrome

fAqs

  • How is Hippotherapy different from therapeutic/adaptive riding?

While both involve horses, hippotherapy is a clinical therapy led by a licensed occupational therapist who uses the horse’s movement to achieve specific therapy goals.

Therapeutic riding, on the other hand, is a recreational adaptive program focused on teaching horsemanship skills, confidence, and independence under the guidance of certified riding instructors.

Our Program Director and occupational therapist will work with you to determine which program best fits your goals and needs.

  • Is Hippotherapy covered by insurance?

Coverage varies. Please contact us for guidance on insurance and payment options.

  • Do clients need prior horse experience?

Not at all! No prior riding or horse experience is needed. The focus of hippotherapy is on the therapeutic benefits of movement, not horsemanship. Our team and therapy horses ensure each session is safe, supportive, and tailored to the participant’s needs.

  • How often do sessions take place?

Sessions are typically scheduled once per week during JHTR’s operating season (May–October). The frequency and duration of participation are determined by individual goals, progress, and therapist recommendations.

  • What safety measures are in place?

Participant safety is our top priority. We maintain rigorous safety standards, and each session is supervised by PATH-certified instructors and experienced volunteers.

  • Do I need a referral to participate?

No referral is required to participate in our programs. Our Program Director will take the time to learn about your individual goals and circumstances to determine which JHTR programs are the best fit for you.

  • How long is each lesson?

Lessons are typically 45 minutes, with time built in before and after for mounting and dismounting.

Please arrive on time in order to take full advantage of your lesson time.

  • How do I apply to participate?

Start by completing our Participant Application and Medical Release Form. Once received, our Program Director will contact you to schedule an intake meeting and determine program placement.

  • What kind of horses are used in hippotherapy?

Our therapy horses are specially selected for their calm, consistent movement and gentle temperament. Each horse undergoes extensive training to ensure safety and responsiveness, allowing therapists to use their movement precisely for therapeutic benefit.

  • What should I wear or bring?

Participants should wear long pants, closed-toe shoes or boots, and weather-appropriate layers. Helmets are provided by JHTR, but you’re welcome to bring your own ASTM/SEI-certified riding helmet if preferred (this must be approved by a Certified Instructor prior to use).
